Alumni Spotlight

Furqaan Mustafa continues his success in the business world after graduating from the College of Business in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems (MIS).  After graduation, Mustafa started working for Chevron, one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies, with subsidiaries that conduct business worldwide. He started his career as a recent college graduate/entry-level Business Analyst at Chevron’s World Headquarters in the San Francisco Bay area offices. Mustafa then moved on to Lead, Business Analyst in 2010.

Mustafa is currently working as Lead, Business Analyst for the Project Management Office (PMO) for Chevron’s North America Exploration & Production (CNAEP) division in Bakersfield, California.  His core responsibilities are to provide tactical and strategic work direction for high performing senior business analyst; lead critical high visibility oil and gas technology driven projects; chair for PMO Community of Practice.  Mustafa recently started taking on Portfolio Program Manager responsibilities.  He is being trained to manage $5-8 million dollar portfolios (resources,  prioritization, stakeholder engagement, risk mitigated, etc.).

Mustafa’s favorite thing about working for Chevron is the ability to leverage his leadership skills to lead teams to build scalable enterprise wide solutions and the challenges that come with it.  His strengths lie on leading the architects, analysts, developers, etc., to execute the projects successfully.

Mustafa believes, “the College of Business’s MIS department believed in my abilities before I realized them.  Specifically, Dr. Rami Khasawneh, Dr. Faisal Abdullah, and Mr. Joe Tomsic all went beyond classroom lectures and labs and acted as mentors.” He is forever grateful.

As for advice to current students, Mustafa says, “dream big and work very smart to make those dreams a reality. Don’t underestimate your potential and luck, go and strive for the best internships and full-time jobs out there and make your family and faculty proud.”
